Our History

Family Furniture Discount Centers was originally established as Fred & Norm's Family Furniture in 1968 by Maryland natives Fred Deutsch and Norman Gilden. They operated out of that single location on Queens Chapel Rd. in Mt. Rainier, MD for 17 years, building a reputation as a great place to find "quality, affordable home furnishings" and becoming fixtures on local TV as the "loveable gangsters" in their television ads.

In 1985 the second store was opened on Iverson St. in Hillcrest Heights. In 1990 the company moved into its corporate headquarters building, including a large warehouse and third showroom on Central Avenue in Landover.

In 1998 the company decided to move from the old Mt. Rainier location to a larger and newer location in close by Langley Park. The name was also officially changed to Family Furniture Discount Centers. The fourth store was opened in Waldorf in 2002.

The Grand Opening of the fifth store occurred Memorial Day weekend 2006. Located in Alexandria, just inside the Beltway, at 395 and Edsall Rd., it is the company's first store to be located in Virginia. Future expansion plans include additional Virginia locations in the Woodbridge or Manassas areas, as well as in Gaithersburg, MD.

The involvement of Fred's son Richard and Norm's son Norm Paul ensures that Family Furniture Discount Centers' commitment to providing "quality, affordable home furnishings" will continue for many years to come.

Mattresses

Family Furniture Discount Centers is an authorized Serta dealer carrying both Sertapedic and Perfect Sleeper models. Most models are in stock for immediate delivery. Attractive pricing makes quality affordable.

We also carry our own specially designed foam encased line of mattresses. Foam encasing gives you more usable surface area and prevents "roll off".
